Lucy is a composer who writes theatrical, eclectic and bold, bordering on outrageous music for the stage and concert hall. She brings an exuberant sense of fun to her work, which blends darkness with humour and joy. She’s influenced by an early love of film musicals, a teenage Sondheim obsession and a wide range of contemporary, electronic, folk and classical music.

She is most at home writing for the voice, bringing stories and characters to life. Lucy greatly enjoys the collaborative process and has had the privilege of regularly working with artists such as Olivia Bell, Rebecca Hurst, Helen Arney, Haroon Mirza and David Spittle.

Lucy has written operas for Bergen National Opera, Grange Park Opera and is currently writing a youth opera for Glyndebourne with writer Olivia Bell.

The Stone Flower

On the day’s
threshold she wakes
to take up
hammer and chisel

‘The Stone Flower’ is a reflection on the process of making and the joy it can bring. A stone carver becomes lost in the flow of the creative process, sculpting a flower from a block of green malachite. As she works, she reflects on the embodied artistic process.

Christmas Magic

Christmas Magic is a festive song written for children’s chorus. In this recording, you can hear primary school children singing with the Glyndebourne Chorus and a small ensemble from the Glyndebourne Sinfonia. It’s also available for piano, symphony orchestra and chamber orchestra.

The song is all about sharing the magic of Christmas with the people around you. It’s full of energy and excitement as everyone comes together to celebrate the season with singing and dancing. Looking up into the sky in search of Christmas magic, we suddenly find ourselves in a distant land full of snow-covered Christmas trees, shooting stars and flying reindeer!
